The Mother Hormone

Progesterone is made from our good cholesterol, the same as all steroid hormones. It is not singularly a “female” hormone as such. We should rather understand progesterone as a precursor hormone –the building material for many other hormones. In other words, it is called the “mother hormone” because it gives rise to many other hormones, and is responsible for ensuring hormonal balance in the body. From PROGESTERONE and 17-OH-PREGNENOLONE, all other steroid hormones can be produced, depending on the body’s requirements.

Without progesterone there would not be any CORTICOSTEROIDS. These are responsible for managing STRESS and keeping AUTO-IMMUNE diseases, INFLAMMATORY CONDITIONS, ALLERGIES, etc at bay.

Progesterone also naturally pushes up SERATONIN levels, which enables a stable state of emotional wellbeing.
Furthermore, both the SEX hormones TESTOSTERONE and the ESTROGENS derive from PROGESTERONE. Progesterone is the antagonist hormone to Estrogen.

hs 476The adrenal steroids, adrenalin and nor-adrenalin, have the first entitlement to the body’s progesterone reservoir. Being our “FIGHT OR FLIGHT” hormones, they are vital for our survival during stressful events. The cave man / woman experienced the release of these hormones only occasionally, whereas we now release them all day long as a result of our stressful living in our western society. In other words our lifestyles are draining our progesterone levels! Stress being one of the main underlying causes of PROGESTERONE DEFICIENCY.

CORTISOL, one of the corticosteroids, is the hormone we release each time we worry. Our constantly demanding lifestyles lead to a continuous release of cortisol, and this reality, coupled with low DHEA, suppresses the immune system over time. Serving as “Nature’s Valium” on the other hand, progesterone ensures that the excessive release of cortisol is prevented, thus having a protective effect regarding our immune health.

hs 490It is therefore understood that progesterone has enormously important role in maintaining health as well as a constant state of well-being. A deficiency in progesterone can lead to hormonal chaos, which includes deficiencies in the corticosteroids –leading to auto-immune diseases, allergies, and inflammatory conditions and increased cancer risk   –which are becoming part and parcel of today’s western modern living as we know it. It is vitally important to help our bodies achieve hormonal balance by supplementing with Natural Progesterone.

Natural  Progesterone as the Antagonist to Estrogen

Why do we say “Natural” progesterone?  Sally Lognden explains that natural  versus synthetic forms of progesterone is incredibly important and makes ALL the difference! Let’s look into this together.

Natural Progesterone is called natural because it is the same molecule found in our bodies. It stems from a natural source. Wild Yam and Soya both have molecules very similar to our own progesterone molecule. These plant steroids are further synthesized into the Natural Progesterone Molecule. This molecule has no side-effects in the body and can be easily eliminated. There are many trusted Natural Progesterone Creams on the market, my preferred brand is called NATURONE.

In contrast to this, the “so-called” progesterone found in drugs is not progesterone in the least. Pharmaceutical drug companies have taken the natural progesterone molecule and further altered it into a chemical that they can patent called Progestins or Progestagens. (Often in the literature the word “progesterone” is used interchangeably with the latter, thereby creating confusion). These are synthetic drugs, and have only one thing in common with natural progesterone, and that is that they are able to sustain the human secretory endometrium.

These synthetic drugs have extremely dangerous side effects which include the following:

  • Increased risk of birth defects
  • May contribute to thrombophlebitis
  • Pulmonary embolism and cerebral thrombosis
  • Causes malignant mammary nodules when tested on dogs
  • Causes fluid retention, epilepsy, migraines, asthma, cardiac & renal dysfunction
  • May contribute to depression, breast tenderness, rashes, acne, weight gain, cervical erosions, cholestatic jaundice, pyrexia, nausea, insomnia, breakthrough bleeding, menstrual irregularities, high blood pressure, dizziness, anxiety, fatigue, decreased libido, PMS, etc.

On the OTHER hand, Natural Progesterone only promotes health through restoring hormonal balance.

  • It is the precursor to oestrogen and testosterone
  • It is needed for the survival & development of the embryo and foetus
  • throughout gestation
  • Protects against fibrocystic breasts
  • Functions as a natural anti-depressant, as it is known as Nature’s Valium
  • Helps with thyroid hormone function
  • Helps to use fat as energy
  • Restores sex drive
  • Restores proper cell oxygen levels
  • Builds bone and protects against Osteoporosis
  • Protects against all types of cancers by switching off the cancer gene
